Link to crime unclear in Cedar Rapids stabbing arrest

A man got stabbed Monday night in Cedar Rapids. Police reportedly have arrested a person in connection with the case, but it's not clear that police are certain about just how the individual is linked to this violent assault.

Regardless of whether charges are eventually brought against the person in custody, it is hoped that he has exercised his right to consult with an attorney. He is reportedly being held on suspicion of interfering with the investigation and under some undisclosed federal warrants.

What authorities have released to the media is that the stabbing is under investigation. It is said to have occurred at about 11 p.m. Monday in the 1800 block of A Avenue NE.

When responding officers got to the scene, they say they found the victim. He was taken to the hospital. His condition apparently hasn't been released.

Officials say that the course of their initial investigation included a search for possible suspects in the immediate area. They say it was during that process that they happened across an individual and he took off on foot.

Police say they caught the man and took him into custody. He's been identified as a 26-year-old male. He has no known address. While he has been booked for allegedly interfering with the official probe and under the federal warrants, he has not been charged with the stabbing itself. Police say that could still happen, however.

It is always important to remember that an arrest, no matter what the reason, does not constitute a conviction. And anyone faced with arrest should seek an attorney's help.
