Iowa mayor accused of sex crimes involving minors

People in Iowa may have heard the shocking report that the mayor of the small northwestern Iowa town of Oelwein stands accused of numerous counts of sexual abuse involving two underage girls. The man, who was elected to the position of mayor in his small town earlier this year, faces five total counts of second-degree sexual abuse for acts allegedly perpetrated upon the girls back in separate incidents back in 2010.

According to the criminal complaint, the events took place in the man's home in 2010. Normally these charges could not have been brought after such a long period of time, but under Iowa law, the statute of limitations, which requires a crime to be charged and prosecuted within a certain period of time, is increased for sex offenses involving minors. While most crimes must be charged within at least three years, Iowa law allows a prosecution to be brought up to ten years after the alleged victim turns 18.

Sex offenses carry a particular stigma in society, and many people who are charged with sex crimes, especially those involving minor children, become social pariahs and suffer long-term consequences in terms of damage to their reputation.

In addition, people convicted of sex offenses face serious prison sentences and longstanding sex offender registration requirements even after they are released. The man faces up to 25 years for each count in the complaint, and may also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

No matter how heinous the allegations, every man, woman and minor child is entitled to a competent and professional criminal defense. People accused of serious felonies in Iowa should always enlist the help of an experienced criminal defense attorney to help them navigate the justice system.
