Man locked in silo may have been kidnapped

People in Iowa may have heard about a curious alleged kidnapping case that occurred earlier this summer in Rock Rapids. The case involved a man who claims that his wife and father-in-law drove him out to the country and locked him in a grain silo on an abandoned farm. He was able to escape the silo. He began walking down the road, but his wife and her father spotted him. They picked him back up, took him out and locking him in yet another grain silo on another abandoned farm. Again, he was able to escape and ran to a local residence, where he was able to call 911.

Iowa mayor accused of sex crimes involving minors

People in Iowa may have heard the shocking report that the mayor of the small northwestern Iowa town of Oelwein stands accused of numerous counts of sexual abuse involving two underage girls. The man, who was elected to the position of mayor in his small town earlier this year, faces five total counts of second-degree sexual abuse for acts allegedly perpetrated upon the girls back in separate incidents back in 2010.

An overview of OWI laws in Iowa

People in Iowa know that drunk driving charges can be serious business, but not everyone knows exactly what it means to be considered a drunk driver under Iowa state law. Drunk driving, or OWI, which stands for "operating while intoxicated", is defined in three ways. A person commits OWI when they do any of the following: 1) operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, drugs or any combination thereof, 2) operating a motor vehicle while having a BAC of .08 or more, or 3) operating a motor vehicle while having any controlled substance in a person's body.

Men in multiple states charged in sexting case

A recent police operation has allegedly linked nine men in Iowa to online sexual communications with a 13-year-old girl. But the chain of suspects doesn't end at the state line. Men from at least four other states have also been accused of making improper contact with the same girl. All of these man may face serious criminal charges. Sex offenses can carry serious prison sentences in Iowa, especially when the victim is a minor. If convicted the accused can also face sex offender registration requirements which may persist for years or even decades after the conviction.

Heroin deaths reach all-time high in Iowa City

People in Iowa may have heard about the growing heroin epidemic across the United States that has continued to claim the lives of hundreds of people. Iowa has not been immune to this epidemic, as the number of heroin-related deaths so far in 2014 show that it has impacted Johnson County and Iowa City in a big way. In the first six months of 2014, 10 people have already died due to heroin, which is more than triple the number of all such deaths in all of 2013.
